serving rules

  • underhand serve: must be hit below the waist.
  • diagonal target: serve must land in the diagonally opposite service box.
  • foot placement: behind the baseline.
  • one serve attempt: no second chances, one serve per team member.

serving sequence

  • start of the game: only one player on the first serving team serves (score starts at 0-0-2).
  • after that: each player on a team serves until their team commits two faults.
  • switching sides: the serving team switches sides after scoring a point; the receiving team does not.

double bounce rule: the ball must bounce once on each side before players can start volleying (hitting it out of the air).

non-volley zone (kitchen)

  • no volleys allowed: you can’t volley while standing in or touching the kitchen.
  • momentum counts: if you volley and your momentum carries you into the kitchen—even after the shot—it’s a fault.

scoring

  • only the serving team scores.
  • games to 11, win by 2. or, first to 15.
  • score called as: serving team’s score – receiving team’s score – server number (1 or 2). example: “6–4–1”.
